Ezra 8:23 So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer. Before making any physical preparations for their long and potentially dangerous journey back to Jerusalem; Ezra and his companions made spiritual preparations. Their prayers and fasting prepared them spiritually and showed their dependence on God for protection, their faith that God was in control, and their affirmation that they were not strong enough to make the trip without Him.
Though only commanded under the Mosaic Law to fast once a year, on the Day of Atonement (Numbers 29:7), fasting was one of the three great religious practices among the ancient Israelites. Fasting and prayer were often done together when seeking God’s guidance, deliverance, or forgiveness. Fasting is mentioned multiple times in the New Testament as well. This Sunday we will look at what the Bible tells us about fasting and whether or not it is applicable to Christians today.
Praying everyone has a blessed week,
In Christ,
