(NIV) I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
Today is Mother’s Day, not a biblical holiday, but a day set aside in our culture to honor mom’s. And moms are viewed as extremely important in Scripture. Scripture is filled with examples of moms who built their houses on the solid foundation of God’s Word.
There was Jochebed, the mother of Moses, who had the audacity to defy the government and save the life of her young son (Exodus 2). Then there was the unnamed stepmom and daughter of Pharoah who adopted Moses and brought him up in Pharoah’s house (Exodus 2). There was Hannah, the mother of Samuel, who faithfully dedicated him to the Lord’s service (1 Samuel 1). And of course, Eve, the mother of all, and Mary the mother of Jesus.
My favorite example though is found in 2nd Timothy 1:5 where Paul, inspired by God, praises the mother and grandmother of Timothy: (NIV) I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. Timothy would grow up to be a powerful preacher of God’s Word and that strong faith was instilled in him by his grandmother and mother.
Proverbs 14:1 says the “wise woman builds her house” and she builds on the firm foundation, on the rock, that is Jesus Christ (Matthew 7:24-27). Praying all of our moms and grandmothers have a happy Mother’s Day.
