In 2nd Timothy 3:1-5 Paul gives a descriptive list of people that Timothy should avoid. These instructions were divinely inspired (2nd Timothy 3:16) and have been preserved for our guidance. The behaviors described in verses 2-4 are indicative of a lot of people in our society today and unfortunately a lot of these folks claim to be Christians. Paul addresses this in verse 5 where he says these folks have a form of godliness but deny its power.
The appearance of being religious includes going to church, knowing some Christian doctrine, using Christian clichés, and following religious traditions. Such practices can make a person look good, but if the inner attitudes of belief, love, and worship are lacking, the outer appearance is meaningless. God warns us not to be deceived by people who only appear to be Christians. It may be difficult to distinguish them from true Christians at first, but their daily behavior will give them away. Jesus says in Matthew 7:16 “By their fruit you will recognize them”. The characteristics described in 2nd Timothy 3:2-4 are unmistakable fruit. Paul’s divinely inspired advice to Timothy concerning these folks, advice that has been preserved for us to follow, is quite simple: avoid such people (2nd Timothy 3:5 NASB).
This Sunday we will take a closer look at 2nd Timothy 3:1-5 and the types of people that should be avoided. Praying everyone has a blessed week.
In Christ,
