Gentleness as spoken of here means Christ-like consideration for others. We are to be gentle (reasonable, fair-minded) to those outside the church as well as to one another. Paul, inspired by God, wrote this verse as part of a concluding exhortation to the church at large which emphasizes the Christian posture to an often hostile society. Everyone should see the church’s gentleness.
