James 1:3 tells us “the testing of your faith develops perseverance.” 2020 has certainly been a year where the faith of many a faithful Christian has been tested but what should our attitude be? We should endeavor to persevere.
To endeavor is to “make every effort”. The Bible says in Ephesians 4:3 to “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Romans 14:19 says we are to “make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.” And 2 Peter 1:5 says we are to make every effort to add to our faith. So God expects His children to “make every effort” to endeavor in things that bring honor and glory to Him.
Persevering is going against hardships in order to strive for excellence. The Bible speaks a great deal about perseverance. 1 Corinthians 13:7 tells us Love always perseveres. In 2 Corinthians 12:12 Paul, inspired by God, spoke of how he had persevered in demonstrating the marks of a true apostle. 1 Timothy 4:16 says to persevere in our life and doctrine. Hebrews 10:36 says we need to persevere. Hebrews 11:27 speaks of the perseverance of Moses who was able to persevere because he saw him who is invisible, referring to his faith. James 1:12 says “blessed is the one who perseveres”. James 5:11 says “count as blessed those who have persevered”. Revelation 2:2 commends the hard work and perseverance of the church at Ephesus. And of course the passage we opened with says in James 1:3 that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.
This week’s lesson will focus on “endeavoring to persevere”. The lesson will be available on our website by 10:00 AM Sunday morning. Praying everyone is staying safe, sane, and healthy.
In Christ,
