Isaiah 63:7-14 is the beginning of what is often called the Lament(s) of Isaiah. This section continues through Isaiah 64. This section of Isaiah can be divided into three parts. In the first part Isaiah is remembering—reminiscing—and listing the mercies that God has shown to His people in the past. The second part (Isaiah 63:15-64:6) is comprised of a group of petitions to the LORD and includes the powerful crying out, “Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you!” (Isaiah 64:1). The third part (Isaiah 64:7-12) is filled with pleading to the LORD and brings Isaiah’s lament to a close.
The first part of this lament begins with Isaiah speaking in first person as he speaks of God’s grace. Isaiah 63:7 I will tell of the kindnesses of the Lord, the deeds for which he is to be praised, according to all the Lord has done for us—yes, the many good things he has done for Israel, according to his compassion and many kindnesses.
Isaiah’s lament begins with the words: I will tell of the kindnesses of the LORD…according to all the LORD has done for us: Despite the agony expressed later in the prayer, the first mention is of the kindnesses of the LORD. This is a great example of how, even in the lowest place, we can praise the LORD and remember His goodness.
