Jude 5-7 Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. 7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.
This passage is very similar to 2 Peter 2:4-6. After reminding his readers that the Lord did indeed deliver His people, Jude then gives examples of those who have blazed a path to hell. Jude reminds us of the judgments of the past. Remember that Israel was God’s elect, His people. But there were those who, though they claimed to be God’s people, did not trust Him, didn’t even really believe in Him. God will judge those who do not believe, even if they claim to be His people. The certainty of judgment is illustrated by three specific examples of God’s judgment in the past: The Israelites that rebelled in the wilderness, the wicked angels, and Sodom and Gomorrah.
This Wednesday we will continue our study on the book of Jude, focusing on verses 5-10. The audio will be posted to the website under Wednesday Bible Study by 6:00 PM on Wednesday the 27th.
