Jesus said in John 5:39-40 “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.” The Scribes and the Pharisees in the first century diligently studied the Law of Moses. Their problem was that they thought it was the strict rule-keeping that would save them when, in fact, the entire law of Moses was pointing toward Jesus Christ. Jesus said in Matthew 5:48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. No amount of rule keeping could make them perfect, only Jesus Christ was able to fulfill the Mosaic Law, so he was and is the only way to have eternal life. This Wednesday we will resume our study on Jesus and the Law of Moses by digging deeper into Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount” in Matthew 5.
