This Sunday morning’s sermon will focus on the story of Achan recorded in Joshua chapters 6-8. By choosing to satisfy his own personal desires, which conflicted with God’s will, he stole that which was “devoted to destruction” and so brought destruction on others. Achan’s sin did not only affect Him but also affected the whole nation. It caused God’s blessing upon the Israelites to be withheld. It led to Israel’s defeat at Ai which led Joshua to temporarily lose confidence in the Lord. 36 men died which affected 36 families. Achan’s entire family was stoned to death. We fool ourselves if we think that our sin affects only us. Sin brings ruin even upon the innocent. Sin’s effects go beyond the initial sinner.
