Romans 12:3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.
Here, Paul, inspired by God, is warning against the pride, self-centeredness, and self-absorption to which we are all inclined due to sin’s influence on us. God’s Word urges us to evaluate ourselves honestly. When we overestimate ourselves, we may try to do things we are not equipped for. There are other dangers as well: We may feel we don’t need others to minister to us, or we may despair when we finally realize we can’t live up to the unrealistic expectations we place on ourselves. Paul states at the beginning of this verse “by the grace given me”, meaning that since everything comes from God there can be no superior attitude or self-righteousness. As God’s Word tells us in Philippians 4:13 we can do all things through Christ, but as Jesus tells us in John 15:5 apart from Christ, we can do nothing. Therefore as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, we ought to clothe ourselves in humility.
This Sunday morning we will look at what it means to clothe ourselves with humility. Praying everyone has a great week!
In Christ,
