Colossians 3:12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Paul, inspired by God, often used the metaphor of putting on clothes when instructing us to adopt the Christian way of life. The use of this analogy of donning clothes tells us a lot about the choices we must make daily. The logical conclusion of the metaphor is as inescapable as it is meaningful: The clothing we wear is largely a matter of our choice. You and I have wide discretion in the clothes we wear. Ours is the choice of what to wear and when to wear it. You and I determine when to take clothes off and when to put them on. More than this, it is a choice we make daily—sometimes many times a day—as we determine what to wear in different social contexts. So it is with the Christian walk, the way of life of the new person in Christ. Daily, repeatedly each day, we must choose to “put on” the Christian way of life.
Over the next 5 weeks we are going to look at each of the characteristics listed in Colossians 3:12 and we will start this Sunday by looking at what it means to clothe ourselves with compassion. So be ready to Get Your Clothes On! Look forward to seeing everybody this Sunday.
In Christ,
