Scripture warns about the serious responsibility of teaching. James 3:1 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. Bible scholars speculate that James’s warning was in response to a problem with too many self-titled teachers in the early church. It could be that some truly thought they were wise, when they were still immature in their faith. Others didn’t have the right motivation or a lifestyle that reflected the truths of Christianity. James is not suggesting that nobody should become a teacher. All Christians have a responsibility as teachers in one way or another and Scripture clearly supports this.
- Colossians 4:5-6 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
- 1st Peter 3:15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…
However, if one who claims to be a Christian does not take this responsibility seriously and they, out of willful ignorance, lead others astray through false teaching, then Scripture seems to say that they will be judged in some way.
