What do all of these ancient oracles teach us today? Isaiah’s oracles teach several important truths, still relevant centuries later. First, God rules over all nations; He’s not a local deity or a territorial god. Despite appearances at times to the contrary, God has His hand in the intricate details of our lives as well as the broad strokes of human history. His message of hope is for people of all nations and ethnic backgrounds.
Second, God rules by His Word, which is sharp and powerful (Hebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account). Through obedience to God’s Word, we can promote God’s will in our lives and bring justice to our communities.
Third, God has the last word. The pretenses and rebellion of modern society will burst like a bubble. Those who ignore God’s Word will be judged at their appointed time.
All evil will have its day in court. Hebrews 9:27 says “people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment”, Hebrews 10:31 reminds us “It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
But those who are in Jesus Christ, those who are living in obedience to God’s Word, we need not fear judgment because as Hebrews 10:39 reminds us “we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.”
